После прохождения курса студенты будут уметь: 

• Аргументированно выражать и отстаивать свою точку зрения в формате TOEFL iBT.
• Успешно демонстрировать основные навыки Public Speaking, необходимые для теста.
• Писать TOEFL iBT-эссе различных видов с использованием структуры, грамматики и лексики уровня Advanced.
• Демонстрировать способность понимать и критически анализировать аутентичные тексты/материалы для аудирования высокого уровня языковой и содержательной сложности.
• Интерпретировать отношение и намерения говорящего с помощью анализа речи и выбора слов.
• Успешно демонстрировать языковые навыки в условиях ограниченного времени.

I. Reading

• Challenging TOEFL Reading Question Types. Reading to Learn Questions.
• Making inferences. Inference questions. Focus on minimizing time/working under time pressure. 
• Previewing and predicting the content of a reading selection at an advanced level (by considering the title, headings and subheadings; identifying the arrangement of topic, and subtopics through outlining; etc.)
• Skimming and scanning texts at an advanced level. Focus on minimizing time/working under time pressure.
• Guessing vocabulary from context (by recognizing clues; recognizing prefixes, suffixes, and roots and discerning their meanings)
• Fact versus opinion (distinguishing vocabulary associated with fact from vocabulary associated with opinion, recognizing stated or implied facts; recognizing stated or implied opinions.)

II. Listening

• Challenging TOEFL Listening Question Types. Connecting Information questions.
• Recognizing speakers’ intent/attitude.
• Understanding advanced authentic listening material (academic lectures; conversations in natural settings with multiple participants, etc.): practice.
  

III. Writing (10 hours in class + out-of-class assignments)

• Types of essays (argumentative, persuasive, personal narrative, etc.) Rhetorical modes.
• Essay structure. Effective introductions and conclusions. 
• Transitions. Clauses and complex sentences. Complex verb forms.
• TOEFL Integrated Writing: effective synthesis of ideas from two sources.
• Incorporation of outside source material.
• Editing, revision and self-correction: practice.
• Impromptu writing: practice.

 
IV. Speaking

•  Principles of advanced public speaking: review of basic speechwriting process; advanced methods of speech organization; introductions and conclusions.
• Delivery: power of language choices; reinforcing speech content and organization with nonverbal communication; voice production and articulation.
• Business and Professional Speaking: presentations, negotiations, reports; interviewing skills. 
• Impromptu Speaking.
